MONTEGIORGIO, HISTORY, BEAUTY AND TIMELESS TRADITIONS

Halfway between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, Montegiorgio welcomes visitors with the charm of its medieval alleys, sweeping views that embrace half the region, and a genuine atmosphere steeped in tradition. Strolling through the historic center, you’ll come across churches, palaces, and theaters that tell centuries of history, while the surrounding hills offer captivating scenery in every season. Here, culture intertwines with flavor, boasting a food and wine heritage that ranges from traditional dishes to the renowned wines of the Fermano hills.

Located on a hill at 411 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Middle Tenna Valley, Montegiorgio is a village that holds millennia of history and an artistic heritage of extraordinary value. Its origins date back to Picene and Roman settlements, as evidenced by archaeological findings, while the current urban layout took shape in the Middle Ages around the Church of Santa Maria Grande, today known as San Francesco. The ancient walls, historic gateways, and paved alleys preserve the atmosphere of an era when the village was a Farfa fief, a free commune, and a center of lively artisanal and commercial exchanges, also thanks to the presence of a Jewish community.

In the historic center you’ll find authentic gems such as the Domenico Alaleona Theatre, the Farfense Chapel with its 15th-century frescoes, the Church of San Michele, and the 19th-century loggia in Piazza Matteotti. The surrounding hamlets preserve treasures just as valuable: from the castle of Cerreto to Villa Fontebella, all the way to the Church of Sant’Angelo in Montiliano, the oldest in the area.

Montegiorgio is also a place of living traditions: folk festivals, markets, and historical reenactments stand alongside a rich calendar of cultural and sporting events. In local restaurants and trattorias, you can enjoy specialties such as vincisgrassi, ciauscolo, and Adriatic-style fried seafood, paired with DOC wines from the Fermano hills.

Whether for a weekend getaway or a longer holiday, Montegiorgio will win you over with its authenticity, quality of life, and the variety of experiences it offers — an open invitation to discover the truest side of the Marche region
